Engineering Democracy: Voting Rules and Political Behaviour in Botswana

Details

Organisation: British Academy

Description

In the proposal, we outlined a research project to produce an in-depth study
of the electoral determinants of political behaviour in an African democracy. Our
primary objective was to stimulate a long-term link between the Department of
Politics and International Relations (University of Oxford) and the Department of
History (University of Botswana). The collaboration was to have three stand-out
benefits. First, the development of the research capacity of both departments by providing
specialist training and teaching to graduate and undergraduate students,
respectively. Second, deployment of a small research team to generate original data
on a sorely neglected aspect of African democracy. This multi-method research
effort was to lead to a series of targeted publications for both academic and non
academic audiences. Third, establishment of a nascent and mutually-beneficial link
between our institutions, based on an exchange of teaching expertise and
research partnership.
