ENG 131: WRITING IN ENGLISH

Course Synopsis
The course prepares students for the numerous academic writing tasks that they will undertake in their various disciplines. It equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to write assignments, research papers, and answer test and examination questions effectively. The course also offers students the opportunity to work in groups, engage in peer reviews, and create portfolios on class activities. All these are geared towards their academic and professional development.

Exit Level Outcomes
a) Demonstrate knowledge in basic research skills (proposal, literature review, data collection,
analysis/interpretation).
b) Develop and apply competence and working knowledge in an African or foreign language.

Teaching and Learning Strategies
Lectures, tutorials, class discussions, practical learning activities, student presentations, group work,
independent work, final examinations.

Related Assessment Criteria
a) Analyse knowledge pertaining to different linguistic and cultural groups in Africa, and Botswana in
particular.
b) Effectively communicate in proper English, in official and public interactions and gatherings.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend all classes all the time without fail.

GRADES: Continuous assessment: 50% Final exam: 50%
Note that the final exam is comprehensive. Quizzes and class exercises will be given throughout the semester to help students develop their writing skills. Students are strongly encouraged to seek assistance as soon as possible if there are any questions about the course material.

There will be no make-up tests. Adjustments (through make-up tests) will be made for tests missed ONLY for reasons of serious emergencies (family deaths, hospitalizations, etc.,) and ONLY with written documentation. Students must be present at tests.
