Delineation of the 2011 high flood water line in the Okavango Delta using RapidEye Imagery

Start date: 11/07/2018

End date: 30/12/2025

The seasonal flooded extent of the Okavango Delta in north-western Botswana is highly variable. In 2011, an extreme flooding event occured therein as a result of unusually high rainfall at the source of the Delta, triggering causalities and substantial damage to property. Communities and individuals living along the Okavango Delta’s tributaries had to be evacuated from their homes. The impact of the flood was also felt in downstream areas including Maun. The objective of this study is to use RapidEye satellite imagery data acquired in 2011 and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to delineate the high flood water line of the Okavango Delta.  The results of this research will contribute to development of large scale flood map products (Flood extent maps) for populated places in the Cubango-Okavango Basin. These products can be useful to decision makers involved in land use landcover management as well as disaster prevention and mitigation and to the general public.
