Elephants at Abu Camp were used for elephant-back safaris until 2016 and interacted with guests until 2019. In 2021, a program to release the 6 adult females and their dependent offspring into the wild was initiated. The 6 Abu adults were fitted with collars recording GPS fixes every 30 minutes, as were two individuals released <10 years previously and three wild matriarchs.

An MPhil project has been undertaken on the effects of release on social interactions, and a PhD study is focusing on movement, behaviour and stress.
