Start date: 08/07/2024

End date: 07/07/2026

Approximately 25 million people are living with amputations (PLWA) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and lack prostheses and adequate rehabilitation.  Botswana lacks an effective prosthetic ecosystem that adequately meets the needs of PLWA, with the nation’s challenges including: a) high acquisition costs (materials and final device), b) inaccessibility of prosthetic services, c) about 10 prosthetists (only 3 Batswana) for the entire country, d) prostheses take long to make 3 wks+), e) patients wait long for prostheses, and f) medical aid groups very poorly cover prostheses. Our project helps to address the above challenges by utilising an affordable, novel prosthetic technology. The study aims to demonstrate that the technology is a viable option for Botswana and understand . Also, focused group of stakeholders will provide comprehensive recommendations for the care of the people living with lower limb amputations.
