Evaluation of Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Capacity in Resource-constrained Countries

Start date: 23/04/2024

End date: 30/04/2026

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex health condition that can have a significant negative effect on the physical and psychosocial functioning of the survivors. The purpose of rehabilitation following SCI is to optimize physical and psychosocial function, enhance functional independence, and renew participation in society. This multi-country study explores rehabilitation professionals' experiences within the public healthcare system regarding rehabilitation services for persons living with spinal cord injuries (SCI). The study will, among other things, look at human resources, financial resources for comprehensive service delivery, and provision of assistive devices and technology in five Southern African network countries (South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania). Furthermore, we will explore the experiences of people living with SCI in these countries, their views on rehabilitation, and the development of low-cost devices designed for their needs.
