Numerous other justifications point to tropical ecosystems as important methane sources globally. Tropical wetlands emit an estimated 50-60% of total wetland emissions. Additionally, there remains a large discrepancy between satellite observation and modeled emissions in tropical wetlands; this discrepancy suggests we do not yet have the correct parameters or predictors in models for methane emissions. Many tropical systems possess high seasonal variability in precipitation amounts and seasonality (e.g., the length and present of dry seasons and/or flooded periods, all of which influence methane emissions). More data and synthesis work are also needed in tropical wetlands to establish key controls to enable accurate upscaling of CH4 emissions.
