Internally funded project
Investigating the on-package nutrition information and marketing techniques of the packaged food supply in Botswana
Project Start Date: 14/10/2025
Project End / Expected Completion Date: 30/06/2027
Worldwide there have been increasing levels of overweight and obesity in recent years (Barquera et al., 2015), South Africa including Botswana is hard hit. Coupled with this, rates of NCD morbidity and mortality are increasing dramatically. The nutrition transition from healthy, traditional foods towards westernised foods has played a role in this (May, 2018; Popkin et al., 2012; Powles et al., 2013). The availability and intake of processed foods and ready-to-eat meals is increasing significantly (Cordain et al., 2005; Johnson et al., 2007.
This descriptive observational study makes use of a quantitative content analysis research design. With the permission of stores management, photographs of packaged food products will be collected by trained fieldworkers at supermarkets and smaller food retail outlets to compile a database of the prepackaged food supply available in the country. There will be no human or animal subjects, and no confidential proprietary information will be captured. The database will allow nutritional information, product reformulation, ingredient lists, marketing and health claims on prepackaged food products to be evaluated and inform health education interventions.
