Internally funded project
Estimating soil carbon stocks for national greenhouse gas inventory reporting in Botswana (ESCOGRIB)
Start date: 01/02/2020
End date: 01/02/2022
All member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are obligated to report on GHG emissions and removals. According to Paris Agreement within the UNFCCC, “parties shall account for their Nationally Determined Contributions”. Furthermore, member states must report carbon stocks and the changes with the stocks using emissions from country-specific values. The Paris Agreement speaks directly to Sustainable Development Goal 13, which calls for reduction in GHG emission in order to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. As signatory of the Paris Agreement, Botswana has ratified to reduce her greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 0.02% as well as to report on carbon stocks. However, there is lack of data on GHG emissions and carbon stocks in Botswana. It is against this backdrop that the proposed study was conceptualized. Thus, objectives of the project are to: 1) quantify soil carbon stocks, 2) estimate soil carbon emissions and 3) assess potential impacts of climate change in carbon stocks in Botswana. To this end, an array of research methods will be applied, including field data collection, remote sensing and laboratory analysis. The project is expected to generate valuable information that would inform policy decisions on climate change issues in Botswana. |
