Over the past 2 decades or so, the triple digital revolution—social network, Internet, and mobile phone—has increasedthe use and popularity of the “selfie.” Within socialsciences, the phenomenon of the selfie has been examinedas a new culture that shapes human self‐presentation, social relationships, and social consumptions. This articleprovides an overview of the most common theoreticalapproaches that have been used by researchers to under-stand the phenomenon of the selfie. In particular, the articlefocuses on the use of the following frameworks: drama-turgic lens, sociosemiotic approach, and dialectical frame-work. In addition to these approaches, this article alsointroduces some preliminary ideas relating to the possibilityof exploring the selfie through the lens of mediatizationtheory. This is based on the argument that the selfie phe-nomenon operates within media logic as it offers symbolicresources, discursive strategies, communicative messages, and performance tactics that shape and transform thepresentation of self, social interaction, and social order. Keyword: Smediatization, performance, selfie, self‐presentation, sociosemiotic.
