The Government of Botswana announced its intention to introduce Botswana local languages as medium of instruction at primary school level in 2023. The paper seeks to critically pursue the proposal to implement mother tongues as medium of instruction from a theoretical perspective of language as a right and a resource in education. The article further seeks to present arguments on crucial issues that should be considered in the implementation of this proposed policy, and the need to carefully consider practicalities on the multilingual social ground. The research context is that the proposal comes at a time when there are incessant debates on mother tongue by local and international researchers on education. The paper will use historical, descriptive, and qualitative methods analysis perspective, and will discuss them within the theories of language as a resource. A model for implementation is proposed at the conclusion as it is hoped it will assuage the suspicions and concerns about the implications of the implementation of the medium of instruction in mother tongues as a right in education in Botswana. It is the view of this paper that the proposal is a significant development in the Botswana education system.
