In accord with clichés such as ‘A Digitalised, Decentralised Future Is Around the Corner’, digitalisation of decentralisation is imperative. Digitalisation confers many benefits: enhanced data collection and management, and convenience and transparency in how governments operate and how the public engages with the government on public affairs. Amongst others, African governments have leveraged Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to digitalise decentralisation, a practice that became more central during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the potential of digitalising decentralised governments effectively, this chapter explores opportunities and constraints in Botswana and Ghana, analysing their attempts at realising digitalised decentralisation. It concluded that Botswana and Ghana are wedded to decentralisation as instanced by their respective legal-institutional frameworks for local government. The former BW has a wekaer form of decentralisation vis-a-vis Ghana. Concerning digitalised decentralisation, Botswana spends fewer resources to digitalise local government. Key policy implications address efforts to develop a solid digitalisation infrastructure, addressing emerging problems such as the digital divide and empowering local governments’ digitalisation capacities.
