The focus of this chapter is those factors that have affected the linguistic rights of three historically marginalised language groups in Zimbabwe’s civil and criminal courtrooms. The major objective of our research was to interrogate the issue of linguistic rights for the three language groups of Shangaan (sometimes spelled ‘Shangani’), Kalanga and Tonga, within the context of criminal and civil courtroom discourse in Zimbabwe. Shangaan, Kalanga and Tonga are predominantly spoken in Chiredzi, Plumtree and Binga respectively.
