Previous studies on personal names have been studied from a variety of perspectives by different researchers. From a semantic and socio-linguistic perspective researchers have attempted to account for meanings of names as cultural products. Such approaches addressed at least two questions: irst, what the names mean and second, why certain personal names are given. In this paper a statistical analysis of Botswana and Setswana names is attempted. The paper employs analytical techniques from corpus linguistics and analyses the names through frequency counts. Frequency counts record the number of times a word occurs in a text. Frequency analysis has been popularised by corpus studies and natural language processing strategies. The paper uses raw frequencies and measure names’ spread across different text iles. The paper answers the question: What are the diffusion models of Botswana, Setswana and English names in Botswana? The study hopes to contribute to the study of Botswana personal names and to the body of research on Setswana.
