Botswana has very high levels of HIV/AIDS prevalence, affecting people in the age groups 20-45 that are of prime working age, and can be expected to be supporting many dependents. It is therefore logical to conclude that rising illness and mortality due to HIV/AIDS will cause a significant fall in the incomes of affected households, and will therefore cause an increase in the levels of poverty and income inequality in the country. Many studies of the economic impact of HIV/AIDS have however concluded that while the aggregate impact may be severe in terms of reduced output and gross domestic product (GDP), the impact in terms of per-capita GDP may well be minimal. This is because the forecast reduction in economic output appears to roughly match the forecast reduction in population
