This study investigates the perceptions of media learners regarding the representation of African culture in AI-mediated media platforms, with a focus on ChatGPT and similar tools. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study engaged two focus groups of Media Studies students from the University of Botswana, employing thematic analysis to explore their views. Key findings reveal a critical awareness of the Western bias inherent in AI-generated content, with participants expressing concerns over its dominant usage and the perceived lack of authenticity and accuracy in representing the African culture. Themes identified include awareness and initial exposure to AI tools, Western bias in AI-generated content, challenges in authentic representation, lack of African context in AI databases, and ethical concerns related to cultural misrepresentation. Participants suggested several improvements, including the incorporation of sundry African cultural elements into AI training datasets, the development of localized AI solutions, promotion of African content creators, collaborative development with African stakeholders, and improved AI literacy programs. These findings align with Social Cognitive Theory and Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony, advocating for more inclusive and culturally sensitive AI practices. By extension, Jegede’s collateral learning concept intersects the two theoretical aspects. The study highlights the dual potential of AI to either reinforce existing perceptions about Africa, or support cultural self-representation, with practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, and technology developers.
