Information systems (IS) project success/failure is a global challenge. Recent studies have revealed that despite the best practices and methodologies applied in Information Systems (IS) /Information Technology (IT) project management field, the world is still experiencing high failure in their implementation. This paper surveys the existing literature on the main factors triggering success or failure in IS/IT based projects. Copious materials relevant to IS/IT project success/failure were critically examined from internationally recognised journals and online academic databases. Findings reveal that to date, numerous IS/IT projects success/failure factors continue to be identified whereas their influence in real life projects are explored in less detail. Moreover, findings highlight that the top most critical IS/IT project success include: top management support, project management, management of requirements, team capability and team commitment. Likewise, findings reveal that the most critical IS/IT failure factors include: lack of top management support, poor project management, poor management of requirements and lack of user training and support. The outcome of this study is of high value for those involved in socio-technical field of IS domain and would assist IS senior managers, IT experts and academics with in-depth knowledge to support their strategic decision-making processes. A framework is also proposed to quantify the interaction of the factors and their relative importance towards the possible outcome on IS project
