Gender equality in real estate ownership is very important in curbing poverty and improving the economic status of women. Equality in real estate ownership also ensures that the sustainable development goals are met. In Botswana, there is gender inequality in ownership of real estate. It has been noted that even though there are funding programs, enabling policies and legislation women are still rating low in real estate ownership. The purpose of this study was to analyze gender inequality in real estate ownership (REO) in Botswana. The research objectives were to identify the factors that contribute to gender inequality in REO in Botswana and to analyze the impact these factors have on ownership of real estate by women. Data was collected from 100 property purchasers, with 50 being males and remaining 50 being females. The data was collected using the questionnaire which was self-administered to property purchasers who had bought property between the years 2013 to 2018. The respondents were selected from a population of 17,996 property purchasers using simple random technique. Data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. The findings reveal that there is gender inequality in REO in Botswana though not as bad as other countries. From the study it was established that an average of 44% of women own real property in Botswana. The factors that contribute to gender inequality in real estate ownership are social, socio-economic, human, institutional, finance and political factors. Measures aimed at promoting gender equality in REO were developed in the study. The implication of these findings on society is that it raises awareness on how women are featuring in REO as well as measures that can be put in practice to promote gender equality in real estate ownership. The other implication is that it paves way for formulation of policies and laws that enable ownership of real estate.
