The world has committed to the 2030 agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is transformational, and to ensure that developments do not leave anyone behind. Countries throughout the world have national approaches in implementing the SDGs mandates – through integrating into existing initiatives, developing special institutions and embedding in national policies, as well as through strategic and sustained partnerships. Such targets are also a concern at institutional levels, including academia. Consequently, the core pillars of higher education, such as teaching, research, engagement and leadership have driven the SDGs implementation. The University of Botswana (UB) has joined in the global goals, thorough the establishment of an SDGs hub. The objective of the hub is to mainstream SDGs into the institutional mandate, to enhance inclusive SDGs implementation through amplifying the messages, connecting stakeholders and activities to ensure impact. Thus the hub has been pioneering the implementation of SDGs within the University. While the work of strengthening implementation on SDGs is ongoing, much is needed on documenting the progress and impact made by academic institutions. Therefore this chapter presents a case of the University of Botswana on implementation of SDGs. The chapter starts by presenting a global perspective on SDGs, national overview on implementation of SDGs, and the global role of higher education institutions in implementing the SDGs. The case for the University of Botswana revealed that, stakeholders are central to all initiatives – student community, non-academic departments, teaching faculties and their priorities in academic programmes, research agenda and engagements such as panel discussions, workshops, sensitization events, are some of the activities undertaken to advocate for SDGs implementation. Collaborations with various stakeholders play a crucial role in achieving SDGs activities within the university. Thus for future perspectives, the University of Botswana aspires to improve on identifying and operationalizing the national frameworks that are consistent with the SDGs and partnering with other government and non-governmental organisations.
