Most African countries opted for mono-party governments immediately after attaining nationhood and over time failed both politically and economically. Botswana, on the other hand, maintained its multiparty framework and survived against the odds. With over forty years of an unbroken multiparty system, Botswana is the longest and oldest standing democracy in Africa. This article therefore examines factors both in terms of preconditions and crafting (role of leadership) which account for its democratic success. The article argues that Botswana is indeed a consolidating democracy when compared to other African countries. Its socio-economic development record and regular electoral culture suggest that Botswana will continue on the democratic path and will be less likely to regress into undemocratic governance in the years ahead
