YES: Africans have long relied on indigenous knowledge (IK) to adapt to disasters triggered by climatic variations. Furthermore, Western approaches are hardly utilized by most Africans who live in remote villages where adoption of modern technologies such as the internet is still low. In the face of climate change, Africans have embraced IK to build resilience. However, given the threats that IK is facing from events such as urbanization, this essay presents a solution that demonstrates how the integration of IK with scientific approaches further enhances Africans' ability to adapt to climate change.

NO: This essay discusses the level of adaptation to climate change on the African continent. Adaptation is needed to overcome climate change, with its extreme events, which worsens existing vulnerabilities, creating scarcity and hardship. The adaptation gap in Africa is related to market systems, funding, technology and innovations and lack of a nexus approach, all of which are needed to insure cross-sectoral, holistic interventions. The continent's economy depends on sectors that are the most vulnerable to climate change. Despite global efforts to coordinate climate change adaptation, these remain insufficient. There is also a paucity of data on SDG13 1 targets, disasters, capacity to integrate climate change into policies and planning tools. Much must be done before we can say that Africa is adapting well to climate change.
