Resilience is one of the major conceptual tools needed to deal with change. It refers to the long-term capacity of a system to deal with change and external shocks, and continue to develop. Resilience thinking has become one of the main ideas and approaches in the governance of tourism development, and it is in a key position when thinking about how the tourism sector and destination communities can manage their vulnerabilities and cope with the impacts of climate change. This chapter positions resilience thinking in tourism and climate change contexts and provides an overview of the different understandings and theoretical groundings of resilience. In addition, destination resilience perspectives are discussed with applications to tourism and climate change with examples from southern Africa. The chapter concludes that destination resilience needs to be positioned as an integral and fundamental part of sustainable tourism governance in southern Africa.
