Social media has very significant positive and negative roles in our society. This study seeks to find out the student's perceptions and attitudes toward social media at the University of Botswana. Data were collected using a specially designed questionnaire during the academic year 2015/2016. The sample size was 100 male and female students of different study programmes, ages, and study years. Research outcome indicates that students are familiar with the use of social media in their academic and social perspectives. The findings also indicate that most students' overall academic performance is on average and most students think the abuse of social media can negatively affect their academic performance.
