In this study, methanol extracts of fruit, bark and leaves of Melia azedarach have been tested in mice to assess their antimalarial effect against the malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei. Trials on early infection show that fruit and bark extracts have significant suppression effect on parasitaemia. Leaf extract also possesses this effect but the results are not significant. On chronic trials, both the extracts, fruit and bark, produced significant suppressive effects after 5 days. On day 9, both extracts reduced parasitaemia significantly but results were less significant than chloroquine. Thus this study indicates that M. azedarach has antimalarial effect but can be used as a drug of choice only if it produces suppression of 100%. Therefore, extracts should be fractionated to get pure antimalarial components.
