Sugarcane (Saccharum complex) is one of the world's most important sugar crops (Bell, Berthelson, Garside and Halpin, 2001). The monoculture approach to sugarcane production is a common practice with sugarcane growers the world over. This system leads to a decline in sugarcane yields by between 15% and 25%, depletion in soil fertility; deterioration in physical soil conditions and the increase in of pests and diseases (Sundara, 1982; Shoko, et al, 2007). Sugarcane is a crop producing large quantities of biomass and therefore removing large quantities of nutrients (Sundara, 1982). According to Viator and Griffin (2001) a tonne of dry matter of sugarcane removes can remove about 1.6 kg N/ha)
