The article discusses the impact of Performance Management System (PMS) foracademic staff (AS) on improvement of organisational productivity at MaputoPedagogical University (MPU) in Mozambique. The aim was to identify the strat-egy for implementation of PMS for academic staff in achieving desired levelsof organisational productivity at MPU. In a bid to understand how the universi-ty managers and academic staff respond to the impact of implementation ofPMS on improvement of organisational productivity, the article sets out four mainobjectives, thus: to review literature on the design and implementation of PMSfor academic staff; to describe the implementation process of PMS conduct-ed; to discuss the strategy of university to achieve academic efficiency in thecontext of university development; and, to analyse the linkage between per-formance assessment results and increased levels of university productivity, aswell as the influence of theories in the adoption of a PMS for academic staffat MPU. The methodology adopted includes a case study and qualitative re-search approach. For data collection, face-to-face interviews and focus groupsdiscussions were conducted, while thematic analysis was applied for data anal-ysis. In terms of target population, two groups of university staff including ac-ademic staff members (professors and lecturers) and university managers (topand lower levels) were selected. Findings revealed that there is direct impact ofimplementation of PMS for academic staff on improving university productivityin teaching and learning than in research and management at MPU. The staffassessment results had no direct impact on the reward system. This included in-centives scheme for university career development, salary increase or trainingfor academic staff, as well as for improving organisational effectiveness at MPU
