One of the important competencies of the 21st century is critical thinking, which composes of analytical, communication, creative, open-minded, and problem-solving skills. In design education, design sketching is one such tool that holistically supports critical thinking and creativity using manual and digital platforms. Manual design sketching is still widely taught in design schools and intensively used in industry. This chapter debates the future-scape of design sketching in the context of hybrid sketching, highlighting the benefits of manual sketching in design and technology education and design practice. The discussions show that although digital platforms continue to make design sketching sophisticated and adaptable to the 21st-century digital learner, the key cognitive development of critical thinking still benefits from the coordination of the mind and hand from the pen-and-paper approach. This benefit is further enhanced by careful use of both manual and digital sketching approaches, implying that a hybrid model of sketching is the future. Implications for teaching design sketching at secondary schools are centred on revising the curriculum to integrate sketching topics with related topics in art to demonstrate the benefits design and technology can reap from art. Such benefits include an easier way of building confidence in sketching and a positive attitude towards design and technology, as art-based drawing skills are less technical than design sketching.
