Background:Toestimatetheprevalenceanddeterminantsofadultunder-nutritioninBotswana. Methods:Across-sectionalsurveywasconductedwhereanationallyrepresentativesampleofpeopleaged20to49years wasusedfor theanalysis.Theoutcomemeasureofunder-nutritionwasmeasuredasBMI,18.5kg/m2. Results:Ofthetotalsample,19.5%ofmalesand10.1%offemaleswereunderweight(BMI,18.5kg/m2).Thewealthindex showedthat30.9%oftheadultpopulationwithlowaBMIbelongstothepoorest20%ofthehouseholdswhileonly9.6% comprisedoftherichest20%ofthehouseholds.Resultsfromlogisticregressionanalysisindicatedthatbothadultmenand womenwhohadnoeducationandbelongedtothelowsocioeconomicgrouphadastatisticallysignificantassociationwith lowBMI. Among the femaleadult population, beingyoungandnot havingwatchedTVat least onceaweekwere significantlyassociatedwithlowBMI.Forthemaleadultpopulation,beingunmarriedwassignificantlyassociatedwithlow BMI. Conclusions:Programmeinterventionsaimedat improvingthenutritionalstatusofadultscanusethesefindingstomake appropriatepolicy, toestablishbaselinesandstudynutritionalchangesover timeanditscovariates.
